Green School
Gibson Island Country School was awarded the distinction of being a Maryland Green School in 2006. This is a notable honor and was achieved by the dedicated work of parents, friends, teachers, staff and students of the GICS community. Since 1999, the Maryland Green Schools Program, administered by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE), has recognized Maryland public and private schools K-12 that:
To qualify for Green School status a school must submit an application that documents activities accomplished over a 2 year period that includes a short description of the school’s Environmental Program and documentation of integration of environmental issue instruction, professional development, celebration, exhibition of conservation best management practices, and sustained school-community partnerships to enhance environmental learning. We proudly display our Green School flag, banner, and bumper stickers and hope that we can serve as a model for other schools and the local neighborhood. Most importantly, our students understand the importance of preserving our environment and that our school embodies this effort as one of our core values. The 2007-2008 school year was a busy one, with the culminating event being a visit to our school by Dr. Jane Goodall. 2008-2009 saw the building of a geodome on our campus, an increasingly active recycling and composting program, and the planting of numerous rain gardens throughout the grounds. And our 2009-2010 School Year is off to a great start! Read about Current Activities and Plans.
