Curriculum
Overview Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes provide your child with activities that meet his or her academic and social needs. Pre-reading and pre-math skills are taught to provide a meaningful introduction to the elementary years.
Grades 1-5
The homeroom teacher has responsibility for language arts, mathematics, and social studies. Language arts begins with a strong phonics approach along with exposure to many types of literature. Extensive writing activities enhance the reading program.
Mathematics focuses on computation skills, mathematical operations, and problem solving. It is taught with the use of manipulatives and related to everyday math through drill, practice, and imaginative projects.
Social studies classes develop the concept of family and community. Within the context of American traditions, an appreciation and understanding of other cultures is explored.

We are very excited to announce a change in our foreign language program.
Having finished a transitional period, our primary foreign language

Environmental Studies Program
One of Gibson Island Country School’s key goals is to promote and support programs and initiatives in Environmental Studies, which we regard as a fundamental component of young people’s learning in the world today and tomorrow.
At all grade levels, GICS students are involved in environmental learning and other projects that increase their awareness of environmental issues, their partnering skills, and their confidence in people’s ability to effect positive change in the world. Parents and teachers assist them with larger projects, and we use the resources of several different environmental organizations.
Our efforts and initiatives culminated in May 2006 with GICS being named an official Maryland Green School!

Cultural Arts
A special awareness of cultural arts is provided
through school assemblies. Assemblies are usually held on Fridays
from 2:00 - 3:00 pm and parents and other persons associated with
the school are always welcome to attend these assemblies with the
students.

Outreach Activities
GICS also encourages an awareness of our greater society through outreach programs. Some of this year's activities include sandwich making for the homeless, decorating an Angel tree by donating presents for needy children at Christmastime, and filling Easter baskets to be donated to needy families during the Easter season.
The Parents' Association is very active
in all these activities. See the Parents
Page for more information
